Tissue Expanders are another form reconstructive surgery, designed to simulate breast re-growth. Instead of using other parts of the body as donor areas to rebuild the breast mound, balloon-type pouches are inserted below the breast tissue and slowly inflated, expanding the breast area. The expander is inflated every 3 weeks or so, until the patient is ready to undergo surgery, at which point an actual implant is inserted. There are a variety of shapes and sizes to choose from.
After the desired size is achieved, a minor surgery is performed to insert the actual implant. The nipple can be added thereafter.
